Tracheal Shave

Tracheal Shave
During puberty, the male larynx grows larger and develops a prominence in the front called “Adam’s apple”. Many transgender women feel self-conscious about a prominent Adam’s apple. The tracheal shave procedure is therefore one of the most popular gender-affirming feminization surgeries. Tracheal shave describes a surgical procedure to reduce a prominent Adam’s apple which is part of the laryngeal thyroid cartilage.

Since we do not shave the actual trachea but rather the thyroid cartilage a more accurate term for this procedure is chondrolaryngoplasty.   This procedure is performed on an outpatient basis by making a small incision in the neck crease. The prominent thyroid cartilage is reduced and contoured to give it a female appearance.

Recovery after this procedure is short with minimal pain. The incision heals well and is barely visible after a few months.
